Seabeach Amaranth

Seabeach amaranth is a rare endangered plant dotting the south shore barrier island beaches whose spreads its seeds by wind and water.  Found at Jones Beach State Park, the plant helps build the beach by trapping sand and creating sand dunes. It’s primary habitat is barrier beach without sand fences often near piping plover nests. It is intolerant of other vegetations and is threatened by beach grooming, foot traffic and tidal inundations.
